Zaveri Bazaar

One of the blasts was in Zaveri Bazaar, in south Mumbai, which has been targeted in the past. This is a busy market area which sees 1 million visitors daily, says Prithviraj Kothari, president of the Bombay Bullion Association, who has an office in that area. Zaveri Bazar was the target of bomb blasts in 2002, and previously in 1993.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, the Government and the people of Pakistan, have condemned the blasts in Mumbai and expressed distress on the loss of lives and injuries.

Bharvani Shankar,28, a salesman in a jewelry store at Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar jewelry area, was eating dinner on the road in Nashta Gully, which literally means "meal street," when he heard aloud blast.
"People were screaming and running. I saw flames," he said.
Police at the scene say four people were killed and more than 20 injured.
"I have never seen people running without hands and feet--it was horrible," said Pankaj Jain, who has a jewelry business across town and had come here when the blast occured.
"It was chaos and horror," he said.

Police comment

A police official speaking to the press at Opera House, one of the blast locations in Mumbai, urged people to remain calm. "It is a very difficult situation, we have gone through it again and again," he said. He had just come from Zaveri Bazaar and was on his way to Dadar. He did not give numbers of fatalities or injuries.
