News from Libya - Questioning the usefulness of the proposed initiatives to address the Libyan crisis, the National Forum for Libyan Tribes has called on Libyans to take their destiny into their own hands. In a statement released Monday by the Jamahiriya News Agency (JANA), the forum urged the Libyan authorities to 'stop paying attention to the initiatives, including those of the African Union (AU), aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the killing of Libyans.' It stressed the need for the Libyan authorities to 'take appropriate measures in mobilizing globally with a view to arming all Libyans to counter the continuing NATO operations in Libya.'
It accused NATO of intransigence in the continued bombing of residential areas which is a violation of the 1970 and 1973 resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Observers said the call by the forum followed NATO's intensified military operations in the last 48 hours in which it targeted residential neighbourhoods in the cities of Tripoli and Sorman, killing several civilians.
